Antique (1906), Rembrandt Van Rijn, Rare etching of A Young Man-Titus

This is a 117 years old (1906-2023) elegantly framed photogravure of a young man named Titus. The original painting can be viewed at the National Gallery of London. This engraving was part of a memorial publication of his tercentenary(300 years:1606-1906) and was first published in parts on March 9, 1906 and completed on 1907 by Wm. Heinemann of London.

It is in excellent condition and elegantly framed. It measures 17 inches high by 14 inches wide and the image size is about 8.25 inches by 5 inches.

The basic process of photogravure was developed in 1850. It is a photographic image produced from and engraving plate. The process is rarely used today due to the costs involved, but it produces prints that have the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. In essence, the production of photogravure consisting of 3 steps: (1)taking the picture, (2) producing a copper printing plate of the image and (3)printing the image on paper. The result is an etched copper plate of the original photographic image.
