Antique 19th C, Rare Etching of the Arrest of Queen Helene (1266) by Carolous of Anjou (O1223)
This is a 139 years old (1884-2023) elegantly framed photogravure of Queen Helene and her 5 children, a painful episode in medieval Italian History. Queen Helene is the widow of Manfred, King of Naples and Sicily together with her 5 children were seized and arrested on February 1266 after the death of her husband and she died in prison in year 1271. The original painting was probably made in mid 1800 by E. R. Von Engerth (1818-1897)) and engraved by Carolous of Anjou. The engraving is dated in 1884 and published by Gebbie & Co. unbound in a portfolio collection edition. The series of Gebbie and Co. photogravure are of exceptionally high quality with deep shade and bright highlights, closely resembling the details and continuous tones of a fine photograph.
It is in very good condition and elegantly framed. It measures 16 inches tall by 13 inches wide and the image size is about 9.5 inches by 8 inches.
The basic process of photogravure was developed in 1850. It is a photographic image produced from and engraving plate. The process is rarely used today due to the costs involved, but it produces prints that have the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. In essence, the production of photogravure consisting of 3 steps: (1)taking the picture, (2) producing a copper printing plate of the image and (3)printing the image on paper.
