Genuine United States Mint: 1913-1938 Buffalo Nickel (50522)
Created by one of our country's greatest artiss, James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel is the most distinctively American of all U.S. Mint coin designs. Treasury officials originally asked Fraser to design a new coin portraying Abrahan Lncoln. Fraser proposed the Indian design instead and produced a coin that became an immediate favorite. Three real Indians were used as models for the famous portrait. The buffalo is actually a bull bison and far from being a part of the Wild West, this one was found in the downtown New York CIty Zoo. The last Buffalo nickel was struck more than a half century ago; today choice, well -made specimens are extremely scarce.
