The Eisenhower Dollar was the 1st big dollar coin ever minted for circulation and the first to depict a specific person.(previous dollar designs featured the symbolic figure of Liberty) It is considered the most artistic of all contemporary U.S. Coins. The coin honors both President Dwight D. Eisenhower and man's first moon landing. Chief Mint Engraver Frank Gasparro created Eisenhower's profile for the obverse and adapted the official Apollo11 insignia for the reverse. Only the nickel-clad copper Ike Dollars were procduced for circulation; this 40% Silver Eisenhower Dollar was made for collectors' sets only. The Mint still has the authority under the Coinage Act of 1978 to produce the Silver like Dollar.
